Concierge for the discerning traveller

Hello there. My name is Sara Renshaw, and I’m the founder of The Green Maya Project in Mérida, Yucatán, México. I am a sustainability consultant from Los Angeles, California, specializing in sustainable tourism. I fell in love with México many years ago, and now my work allows me to share the magic with you!

With over two decades of owning and operating tourism businesses in Merida, I have an unrivalled understanding of the area. I am able to curate unforgettable, tailor-made travel experiences throughout the Yucatán Peninsula for you, the discerning traveller, by combining my extensive experience, relationships with the locals, and intimate knowledge of the region - with your unique preferences.

We Are Sustainable Tourism

Also known as eco-tourism, is an approach to travel and tourism that minimizes negative impacts on the environment, puts your health first, preserves cultural heritage and promotes economic and social benefits for the local communities we work in.

Ensuring Sustainable Operations at The Green Maya Project:

  • We prioritize eco-conscious hotels and lodging with 4-5 star ratings.
  • We carefully select authentic nature activities, avoiding man-made attractions.
  • We venture off the beaten path, avoiding popular destinations, or schedule VIP visits during off-peak hours.
  • We practice the "Leave No Trace" principle by rejecting single-use plastics and providing reusable water bottles, dishes, and cloth napkins.
  • We prefer non-motorized activities such as sailboats, kayaks, bikes, and hiking.
  • We provide non-toxic sunblock and mosquito repellent.
  • We encourage guests to switch their phones to airplane mode and reconnect with nature and the present moment.
  • We support the local economy by dining at independent restaurants and sourcing supplies from local artisans and vendors, ensuring they are not manufactured or imported.
  • We refrain from feeding animals or engaging in paid photo opportunities with them.
  • We abstain from purchasing or acquiring wildlife products like seashells, feathers, ivory, skins, shells, or furs.
  • We foster connections with the local culture through art, music, and dance programs, share meals with local Maya families, and offer volunteer activities.
  • We contribute in the right way by refraining from giving money, treats, or used goods directly to locals and instead donating to reputable local organizations.

We care deeply about the places that we work in, so we make sure to show our appreciation by giving back. A percentage of every ticket purchased is donated to local mangrove reforestation programs (ask us which ones) and the local arts program Kookix Music School in Dzemul, Yucatán.
